The particle に indicates the time at which an action takes/took place. Such time words as o'clock, minutes, days of the week, months, and dates take に after them when followed by a verb. Time words whose meanings are relative to when the speaking takes place (e.g., きょう[today], せんしゅう[last week]) do not take the particle に to express a point of time at which an action takes place.
